Belgium has the oldest existing compulsory system which was introduced in 1892 for men and 1949 for women. You have to be aged 18 or over to vote and if you fail you recieve a fine. Not only this, but if you fail to vote for at least elections then citizens lose the right to vote for 10 years.

It is the same in Australia, if they fail to vote then their fine is AU$20-AU$50 which is about £9-£21. They could also face possible imprisonment if they then refuse to pay fines. It was introduced in 1924.

Argentina was introduced to the law in 1912.

Brazil is where it is compulsory for literate citizens between 18-70 years old.

Compulsory voting also happens in other countries such as: Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Fiji, France (senate only), Gabon, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Nauru, Paraguay, Peru, Philipines, Singapore, Switzerland (Schaffhausen), Thailand, Turkey and Uruguay.
